5G Phones in South Africa
A 5G phone is a handset built with a fifth generation mobile radio alongside its 4G one. As of October 2026 Smartphone Shop stocks 5G handsets from Honor, OPPO, Xiaomi, Realme and Ulefone.
Every 5G phone on this page runs Android with the Google Play Store installed, and every phone we sell is network unlocked and ICASA approved. The prices shown on the product cards above are live. They update as stock and exchange rates change, so what you see there is always the current price.
Every 5G handset listed above is in stock with us today, from Honor, OPPO, Xiaomi, Realme and Ulefone. Smartphone Shop has sold online since 2010 and holds a 4.9 rating on Google, and every phone carries a one year manufacturing warranty.
Before the range, the honest part, because most pages selling 5G in South Africa skip it.
Whether You Actually Need 5G Yet
5G is faster than 4G, and in South Africa the question is not speed, it is whether you will ever be standing in it.
Coverage is concentrated in parts of Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town and Durban, and thins out quickly beyond them. Outside those footprints a 5G handset connects to 4G and behaves exactly like a 4G handset. You have paid for a radio you are not using.
Inside the footprint the difference is real. Large downloads land in seconds rather than minutes, video calls hold up better in crowded places, and tethering a laptop stops feeling like a compromise. If you live and work in a metro and move a lot of data, it is worth having.
So the straight answer is this. Buy 5G if you are in a metro, you move large files, or you keep phones for four or five years and want the handset to still make sense at the end of it. Skip it if you are mostly on WiFi, mostly outside the metros, or spending under R5000, because the money buys more useful things lower down the specification sheet.
Our guide to 4G and 5G goes through what the two actually do differently, without the marketing.
What Does 5G Mean on a Phone
5G on a phone means the handset carries a radio that can connect to a fifth generation mobile network, alongside the 4G one it already has. The phone chooses automatically, and the 5G symbol in the status bar means it has found a signal it can use.
Three things worth knowing that rarely get said:
It does not make your WiFi faster. 5G is the mobile network only, so at home on fibre nothing changes at all.
It uses more battery when it is working hard, which is part of why 5G handsets tend to carry larger batteries than the generation before them.
Your SIM and your plan need to support it too. The handset is only one of the three pieces, and all three have to line up before you see a 5G connection.

The Cheapest 5G Phone in South Africa
The cheapest 5G phone in South Africa is asked directly on the Google results page, so here is the honest answer.
With us, 5G starts around the middle of the range rather than the bottom. The OPPO A6 Pro 5G and the Redmi Note 14 Pro+ 5G are the two cheapest 5G handsets we stock, and both are well above the budget band.
That is not a quirk of our pricing. A 5G modem costs more to put in a phone, and it is the first thing manufacturers leave out to hit a budget price. Nothing under R5000 from any brand in South Africa carries it, which is why Phones Under R3000 and Smartphones Under R5000 are entirely 4G LTE, and why that is the right trade at those prices rather than a shortcoming.
If the budget is below the 5G entry point, buy the best 4G handset the money reaches instead of the worst 5G one. You will have a better phone every day of the year.
Which Phones Can Get 5G
Only phones manufactured with a 5G radio can get 5G, and it cannot be added later by a software update or a new SIM. If the handset was not sold as 5G, it will not become 5G.
The simplest way to check is the model name. Manufacturers put 5G in the title when it is there, which is why every handset in the table above carries it. If a phone's name does not say 5G, assume it does not have it. Our full ranges sit in Honor, Xiaomi, OPPO, Realme, Huawei and Vivo.
One brand note. Huawei handsets sold in South Africa are 4G LTE rather than 5G, whatever some local articles say, and they also ship without the Google Play Store, using Huawei's own South African AppGallery page instead. Huawei Phones Under R3000 covers both points in full.
Dual SIM and Why Network Unlocked Matters
Every 5G phone we sell is dual SIM and network unlocked, and that combination saves people real money.
Most retailers sell network locked phones. The handset only works on the network that sold it, so moving means a new number or paying to have it unlocked. Ours work on Vodacom, MTN, Telkom and Cell C the moment you open the box, and every one is approved by ICASA, South Africa's communications regulator, which also licenses the spectrum the 5G networks run on.
Dual SIM is what turns that into savings. Keep your usual number on the first SIM. Put a second SIM in for data on whichever network is running the better deal that month. Cheaper data, same number, one phone. Every 5G handset on this page takes two SIMs.
On a 5G phone this matters more than usual, because 5G coverage differs sharply between networks in the same suburb. Two SIMs lets you use whichever one actually has it where you are.
Buying Outright Rather Than on Contract
5G handsets are the ones most often sold on contract, and it is worth doing the sum before you sign.
A phone bought outright is paid for and it is yours. The same handset over two years on a contract costs considerably more by the end, and you are tied to one network for the duration, which cancels the dual SIM advantage above. On 5G specifically that lock-in is worse, because if your network's coverage does not reach your suburb you cannot simply move.
Our piece on why buying upfront beats a contract runs the numbers, and buying on credit covers the middle option.
Buying a 5G Phone from an Independent Shop
Smartphone Shop has traded online since 2010 and holds a 4.9 rating on Google. We are not a network store and we are not a chain. That usually makes us cheaper, and it definitely makes us easier to reach. All our phones are network unlocked and ICASA approved, and every phone we sell carries a one year manufacturing warranty.
Some of our stock is global variant rather than local-badged. We say so on the product page where it applies, it is part of why the price is lower, and it carries the same one year warranty as everything else we sell.
Getting the Most from a 5G Phone
5G works the radio harder than 4G, so battery habits matter more on these handsets than on a budget phone. Our guide to charging your phone to save the battery is worth reading once. Our review of the Xiaomi 12 Lite 5G is a good account of what a 5G handset is like to live with day to day.
If you are tethering a laptop regularly, a proper router is usually the better answer at home, and those sit in WiFi Routers. A power bank is worth having if you use 5G heavily away from a plug. Cases and cables are in cellphone accessories.
Buying several handsets for a business or a team? Bulk and wholesale orders is the page for that, and the pricing works differently.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does 5G mean on a phone?
It means the handset carries a fifth generation mobile radio alongside its 4G one, and will use whichever it finds. It does not make your home WiFi faster, it uses more battery when working hard, and it needs a SIM and a plan that support 5G as well as the phone. Without all three, the handset runs on 4G.
What is the cheapest 5G phone in South Africa?
With us the entry point is the OPPO A6 Pro 5G and the Xiaomi Redmi Note 14 Pro+ 5G, which sit together at the bottom of our 5G range and well above the budget band. Nothing under R5000 from any brand in South Africa carries 5G, because the modem is the first thing left out to reach a budget price. Below that point, the best 4G handset your money reaches is the better buy.
What are 5G phones?
Phones built with a 5G modem, which lets them connect to the fifth generation mobile networks run by Vodacom, MTN, Telkom, Cell C and Rain. In practice they are ordinary Android phones with one extra radio and usually a larger battery to feed it. Everything else about using them is the same.
What phones can get 5G?
Only phones manufactured with a 5G radio. It cannot be added by a software update or a new SIM card. The quickest check is the model name, because manufacturers put 5G in the title when it is there. If the name does not say 5G, assume it does not have it.
Is 5G worth it in South Africa?
5G is worth it in South Africa if you live and work in a metro and move large files. Coverage is concentrated there and thins out quickly beyond it, so elsewhere a 5G phone runs on 4G and you have paid for a radio you are not using. Mostly on WiFi, or outside the cities? Put the money into memory, storage or battery.
Are Huawei phones 5G?
The Huawei range sold in South Africa is 4G LTE rather than 5G, whatever some local articles report. We checked this against Huawei's own South African specification sheets. Huawei handsets sold here also ship without the Google Play Store, which is a separate point worth knowing before you buy.
Do 5G phones work on South African networks?
Yes, and on any of them. Most retailers sell network locked phones, which ties you to one network and often means changing your number. Every phone we sell is network unlocked and ICASA approved, so you keep both. Our guide to 4G and 5G covers whether 5G is worth paying for where you live.
What warranty do 5G phones come with?
Every phone Smartphone Shop sells carries a one year manufacturing warranty, global variant stock included. The warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship under normal use. It does not cover physical damage, liquid damage or unauthorised software changes. Full terms sit on our Returns and Refunds Policy page.
Why buy from an independent shop rather than a network store?
Smartphone Shop has traded online since 2010 and holds a 4.9 rating on Google. We are not a network store and we are not a chain, which usually makes us cheaper and definitely makes us easier to reach when something goes wrong.
How much is delivery and can I return it?
We deliver anywhere in South Africa and orders arrive within 1 to 4 working days. The delivery cost is shown at checkout before you pay. Returns are free, we arrange and pay for the courier, and the window is 7 business days.
