Huawei Phones in South Africa

Smartphone Shop stocks Huawei phones from the Nova range, alongside Huawei watches and bands and Huawei earbuds. Huawei is still the third largest phone brand in South Africa by market share, behind Samsung and Apple, which is a useful thing to know if you have been told nobody buys them any more. Plenty of people do.

Every Huawei phone we sell is network unlocked and ICASA approved, and carries a one year manufacturing warranty. The prices shown on the product cards above are live. They update as stock and exchange rates change, so what you see there is always the current price.

What is different about Huawei, and the reason this page is longer than most, is the software. Huawei phones run Android underneath but without Google's apps and services on top. That is a real difference, it is not a fault in the phone, and whether it matters depends entirely on which apps you use. The next few sections answer that properly instead of leaving you to find out after the box is open.

Do Huawei Phones Have Google Apps and the Play Store?

No, and it is worth understanding why, because the reason tells you what will and will not change.

In May 2019 the United States added Huawei to its entity list. Google is a United States company, so Google was no longer permitted to licence Google Mobile Services to Huawei. Google Mobile Services is the bundle most people never think about: the Play Store, Gmail, Google Maps, YouTube, Chrome, Drive and Google Play Services underneath them all. Every Huawei phone released since that ban ships without it. Huawei remains on that list today, and no phone we sell has the Play Store on it.

Instead, Huawei built its own. AppGallery is Huawei's app store and it comes installed. Petal Search finds apps and content. Petal Maps handles navigation. These are not stand-ins that half work. Petal Maps in particular has a following among South African Huawei owners who prefer it.

Three things follow from this, and they are the three that decide whether a Huawei suits you:

1. Apps that are in AppGallery install normally. You search, you tap install, it works, exactly like any other phone.
2. Apps that are not in AppGallery can usually still be installed by downloading the app file directly from the company's own website. WhatsApp works this way.
3. Anything that depends on Google Play Services underneath will not work properly, and no workaround changes that reliably. Google Wallet and tap to pay are the clearest examples.

We are not going to tell you this is a small thing. For some people it is the reason not to buy a Huawei, and that is a fair decision. If you want a phone with the Play Store on it at a similar price, our Honor phones are the closest equivalent, because Honor was sold off by Huawei in 2020 and is not subject to the same restrictions. Which South African Apps Work on a Huawei Phone

This is the part nobody writes down, so here is what we can say with confidence and what we cannot.

WhatsApp works. You get it through AppGallery, which sends you to WhatsApp's official site to download it. It then updates and behaves normally.

Banking is better than most people expect. Several South African banks publish a Huawei version of their app and link to it from their own websites, which is the strongest evidence available:

If you bank somewhere else, check your bank's own download page before you buy rather than taking our word or anyone else's. Do not install a banking app from an unofficial file sharing site. Both FNB and Capitec have publicly warned against exactly that, because a fake banking app is how people lose money.

Tap to pay is the real gap. There is no Google Wallet and no Samsung Pay on a Huawei. FNB customers can use a third party app called Swoo Pay for tap to pay, which arrived in late 2025. Customers of other banks currently cannot. If paying by phone at the till is something you do every day, weigh that properly.

Google's own apps are the honest weak spot. There is no official Gmail, Maps or YouTube app. YouTube works in the phone's browser. Petal Maps handles navigation. Some owners run a sandbox app such as GBox to reach Google apps, and it does work, but it runs constantly in the background and owners report a noticeable cost to battery life. We would rather tell you that than let you discover it.

Everything else, and this is the honest limit of what we know, needs checking against AppGallery for the specific app you care about. Huawei published long lists of South African apps a few years ago and we are not going to repeat five year old marketing as though it were current. If there is one app you cannot live without, search for it in AppGallery on a display phone or ask us before you order and we will check it for you.

Do Huawei Phones Run Android or HarmonyOS?

Both answers are floating around and one of them is wrong for the phones sold here, so this is worth being precise about.

Huawei phones sold in South Africa run EMUI, which is Huawei's own version of Android. Because it is Android underneath, ordinary Android apps run on it normally. The Nova 14 we stock ships with EMUI 14.2.

HarmonyOS NEXT is the version you may have read about that drops Android app compatibility entirely. Huawei has kept that to the Chinese market. It is not on the phones sold in South Africa, and several South African articles have got this wrong. If you have been put off Huawei because you read that its phones can no longer run Android apps, that story is about a different product in a different country.

The Huawei Nova Range Explained

Huawei's naming is easier than most once someone lays it out, and almost nobody does.

Inside each line the number is the generation, so a Nova 14 is newer than a Nova 13, and a Nova 13 is newer than a Nova 12. In the Y series the number works the same way, so a Y72 sits above a Y61.

Huawei Nova 14

The Huawei Nova 14 is the current Nova generation and the phone most people on this page are looking for. It carries 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, which is a generous specification, and it is dual SIM.

12GB of memory is the number worth pausing on. It is what keeps banking, WhatsApp, maps and a few social apps open at once without the phone quietly closing things behind your back. 256GB of storage means you are not deleting photos to make room for an app.

It is worth knowing where the price sits. Huawei's own South African store lists the Nova 14 at a recommended price, and ours is currently below it. That is the whole argument for buying from an independent shop rather than a brand store, and it is checkable in about thirty seconds.

Huawei Nova Y72 and Nova Y72s

The Y series is where Huawei's value case is sharpest in South Africa, and the Y72 name is one of the most searched Huawei terms in the country.

The current model we carry is the Huawei Nova Y72s, which carries 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, dual SIM, and lands under R3,000. It is the newer of the two Y72 models and the one we would point most people at. For a phone handling WhatsApp, banking, calls, photos, social and streaming, that specification is comfortably enough, and the Y series is built around battery life rather than headline features. It makes a sensible first smartphone, a work phone or a second phone for a second number.

Do Huawei Phones Have 5G?

Mostly not, and you should check the specific model rather than assume.

Huawei lost access to 5G components under the same restrictions that cost it Google services, and for five years no Huawei phone sold in South Africa had 5G at all. That changed in August 2026 with the Pura 90s series, which is Huawei's first 5G phone here since 2021.

The Nova phones on this page are 4G LTE. On South African networks in 2026 that is still the connection most people are actually using most of the time, and 4G handles video, banking, maps and social without strain. Dual SIM and Why Network Unlocked Matters

Every Huawei phone we sell is dual SIM and network unlocked, and that combination saves people real money.

Most retailers sell network locked phones. The handset only works on the network that sold it, so moving means a new number or paying to have it unlocked. Ours work on Vodacom, MTN, Telkom and Cell C the moment you open the box, and every one is ICASA approved.

Dual SIM is what turns that into savings. Keep your usual number on the first SIM. Put a second SIM in for data on whichever network is running the better deal that month. Cheaper data, same number, one phone. Every Huawei handset on this page takes two SIMs.

Huawei Watches, Bands and Earbuds

Huawei's wearables and audio sit in a different position to its phones, because they do not depend on Google services in the same way and they have kept a strong reputation.

The Huawei Watch GT 6 is the 46mm stainless steel model. The Huawei Band 11 and the Huawei Band 10 are both Discovery Vitality approved devices with up to two week battery life, which is the specification that makes people actually wear them. Is a Huawei Phone Worth Buying in South Africa?

It comes down to one question, and it is not about the phone.

The hardware is not in doubt. Huawei's cameras and battery life have kept their reputation through the whole restriction period, the build quality is good, and the price against specification is strong precisely because of the software situation. Huawei is still the third largest phone brand in the country.

So the question is only this: is there an app you cannot do without that is not in AppGallery? For a lot of people the honest answer is no. Their bank is there, WhatsApp is there, and the rest is browser and streaming. For other people it is an immediate yes, usually YouTube, Google Maps or tap to pay, and for them a Huawei is the wrong buy and we would rather say so than sell them one.

Work out which of those two people you are before you order.
